Penha Longa Resort, Sintra

Penha Longa Resort

Portugal
As seen by Ronan Keating
Nestled within a national park among verdant Portuguese hills, the Penha Longa Resort boasts a fascinating history, oodles of natural beauty, and all the modern luxuries you would expect from a top 5-star hotel.

There’s plenty on site so guests can just ‘fly and flop’, such as the indulgent spa, infinity pool, lush golf course and Michelin star dining. But the resort is also superbly placed for experiencing the area’s many sites of interest: the historic town of Sintra, the beaches of Cascais, and then there’s Estoril, a place of inspiration for Ian Fleming that has been used as a location for James Bond movies.

The property itself also boasts a fascinating history, and was once used as a retreat for royalty. Today the hotel makes the most of its stunning setting, with picture postcard views from the private balconies, jogging tracks for a run through the trees and cycling paths with bicycle rentals for the whole family.

A short flight from the UK, this luxury Portuguese hotel is a spot guests return to year after year.

Eat

Foodies, in particular those who enjoy top-level dining, are really spoilt for choice at Penha Longa thanks to its eight restaurants, three of which have been awarded the coveted Michelin star accolade.

LAB by Sergi Arola is all about innovative gastronomy; Midori offers traditional Japanese favourites; and then there are the exceptional tasting menus of the Eneko Lisboa restaurant by Basque chef Eneko Atxa, holder of six Michelin stars. All three of these restaurants are Michelin star awarded.

However there are less formal dining options too, perfect for families. Offering a buffet night there is Spices, with tastes from Thailand, Vietnam, China and Japan; tapas and modern Portuguese favourites are on the menu at Arola; there’s Italian fine dining with a view at Penha Longa Mercatto; Aqua is the poolside restaurant with plenty of fresh fish; and finally Eneko Lisboa and Basque restaurants, located in Alcântara, offers a dining experience in its own league.

There’s also B Lounge with its huge selection of cocktails and gin, or a tasty afternoon tea.

Just a 2.5 hour flight from London, Penha Longa’s nearest airport is Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado. From there, it’s a speedy 25 minute transfer to the resort; all in all making it an easy short-haul destination to reach if you’re time limited or prefer shorter travelling time.

For day trips from the resort there’s plenty within a half hour radius, including the city of Lisbon, the UNESCO heritage town of Sintra, the gardens of Monserrate and trendy Cascais.

Or of course you could head to the coast with surfer’s favourite Guincho beach just 10 minutes’ drive away, while Estoril and Cascais are better suited to families thanks to their calm waters. Head to Cabo da Roca for a photo opportunity at Europe’s westernmost point.

Why here?

Robert Trent Jones Jr has designed the two world class golf courses; the Atlantic with 18 challenging holes, and the Monastery with its easier nine holes. An absolutely stunning spot for a Portugal golf holiday whether you’re a seasoned pro or just learning.

The Thai spa and wellness club, including a gym, are extra special, based around stunning gardens with pavilions and pools and using products from Natura Bissé.

Indoor and outdoor swimming pools provide options for enjoying the water year-round, with refreshments served at the outside pool restaurant.

The kids’ club at the resort provides excellent provision for younger guests of all ages, with amenities for babies; tennis lessons and golf clinics for school age children; and movie nights and pizza parties for teens.

Penha Longa also offers court sports including tennis and squash, and a stunning jogging track through the estate.

Our take

The resort is set in some particularly ‘wow’ natural scenery, with the 14,583 hectares of lakes and mountains of the Sintra Natural Park on its doorstep. We recommend the Penha Longa Historical Circuit, a guided walk through the Natural Park where you’ll visit its ten monuments and discover the fascinating story behind Long Rock.

We’ve had the inside scoop from the resort that it will be updating its Atlantic golf course in the not too distant future. The Robert Trent Jones Jr-designed course will have renovations made to its fairways and bunkers, with the latter reportedly requiring a whopping 750 tonnes of local sands!

Seen it

The Travel Seen team scoured their little black book of top family hotels for the perfect retreat for Ronan and his family. With Portugal as their first choice for a short-haul holiday, there was a hotel we’d Been & Seen which we knew was the perfect fit: The Penha Longa Resort.

“It really was the perfect first getaway for our family,” says Ronan.
