The Italian capital has wonders aplenty for a busy city-break of sightseeing, Insta-snapping and unique travel experiences.
So with that in mind the Travel Seen team and some of our famous friends and influencers have collated five of the best reasons to visit Rome…
The incredible history of the city is what makes it so distinct. And whether you’re visiting for a romantic weekend, taking the kids or just wanting to explore somewhere new, making time to tick off Rome’s ancient sites is a must.
The most notable ones not to miss are the Roman Forum, the Pantheon and the Coliseum. As Sarah Boyce said during her Travel Seen trip to the city: “There are treasures of antiquity and amazing art and architecture at every turn in Rome”. We arranged for Sarah and her family to have a half day tour of Ancient Rome – a great way to see the city’s finest without needing to worry about transport or tickets.
Ok so it’s not technically ‘Rome’ as it’s its own city-state within Rome, but you can’t stay in the city and not make time to visit this unique centre of religion, architecture and art.
Head here on a Wednesday morning and you might be lucky enough to see the Pope during his weekly public audience.
Then see the beauty of Michelangelo’s world-renowned frescoes in the Sistine Chapel and have a walk through St Peter’s Basilica.
Whatever you’re up to during your time in Rome, you’ll be well sustained by the exceptional food and drink choices.
It seems in Rome, everything tastes good. Whether it’s a cappuccino from a café in a quiet street, or a carbonara in a traditional pasta eatery; an Aperol Spritz with a terrazzo view, or a Michelin-star menu at a famous restaurant.

@gabriele.garofalo1 tells us: “The restaurants I would recommend are: one-Michelin star restaurant All Oro, Plazzo Manfredi and Hotel Raphael.”

The piazzas are wide, open public spaces surrounded by buildings in the heart of the city; in the UK we’d call them a town square.
They are dotted all around Rome and offer beautiful spots to sit with a coffee or a glass of wine and simply people watch.
Don’t miss the Piazza di Spagna – home to the tourist hotspot, the Spanish Steps – or the Piazza di Trevi, where you’ll discover the legendary Trevi Fountain.
Finally be sure to allow a few hours for shopping, where the Eternal City has plenty of variety, from bustling markets to high-end boutiques.
You’ll find brands you know at Via Cola di Rienzo and luxury Italian labels at Galleria Alberto Sordi. Porta di Roma is a sprawling, air conditioned shopping mall which couldn’t be more different from the flea market-experience at Porta Portese.
